Choice of Video Platform

For multi-stream video events we need a platform that:

  • can scale to 100-200+
  • has breakout rooms
  • has record functionality
  • is stable
  • is affordable
  • either doesn't require a download or is widely used enough that people have already downloaded

The main open source candidates at present are:

  • Jitsi - being discussed here: infra/ops#778 (closed)
  • BigBlueButton - used by several partners (including two involved in the first event - who both host instances).

The main private candidates are

  • Zoom
  • Google Hangouts (will add to this list).
