Lisbon Translation Sprint
This is a proposal to host a 5 day sprint in Lisbon, Portugal for the purpose of translating civicrm.org into various languages. This is no small task, so we would ask (i.e. "politely require") that participants dedicate a minimum of 6 hours per day on the translation work until the job is complete. Let's face it, sometimes it's easy to get distracted at sprints on your own work. That can cause us to be less produtive than we hope to be. That said, this effort needs a commitment if we're going to realize it.
Proposal Details
- Target date:
late October, early November 2021. Postponed to Spring 2022. - 5 days total, format something like: 2 days on, 1 day off, 2 days on. Monday through Friday, allowing for travel on weekends to either side.
- Lodging coordination and costs would be managed by the attendee.
- Work space would be a local coworking space that provides: group space, meeting rooms, outdoor meeting space, coffee, very light snacks, beer, A/V, 24 hour access. Cost: 75EUR per person for the 5 day window. Quote supports up to 10 people.
- Day off could be an organized activity (surf's up people!
🏄🏾 ) or an individual sight seeing activity. - Travel costs would be assumed by the attendee.
Primary Objectives
- Establish a process by which we can coordiate and maintain new content and content revisions.
- Translate civicrm.org into several languages.
- Establish a plan to translate additional resources, such as docs.civicrm.org
Other Relevant Points
- Additions and/or revisions to content in EN on civicrm.org would need to be finalized prior to the sprint.
- CiviCRM LLC would cover costs of coworking space and possibly a small stipend to assist in offsetting participant costs.
- CiviCRM LLC would coordinate sponsor support to offset participant costs. Disclaimer: there's no guarantee that we'll be successful in raising funds, so it's possible that each attendee will be responsible for 1) their travel costs 2) their lodging and 3) their meals.
- Question: is there a minimum number of languages that we should require attend before formally committing to this event?
Commitment to the coworking space is very flexible. No deadline or deposit necessary. It's likely that all other travel details would need to be confirmed sooner. Likewise, if we are to raise some funding, it's best that we get started soon.
That said, it would be good to get formal commitments in the comments below. Please indicate if you will "definitely" attend, "likely" attend or "unlikely" to attend. Also, please indicate the ideal date for you from the tentative dates below:
Tentative Dates
TBD later in 2021.
Disclaimer: As of this writing, covid cases are climbing in Portugal and restrictions are coming back in force. At the same time, vaccination rates are over 40% and moving quickly. Still, there seems to be a not insignificant risk that this effort and/or travel related to this event could be disrupted in the autumn.
